Significance of Nutrients in a VLCD

Protein

1.2 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram ideal body weight compensates for nitrogen loss that occurs during fasting. Three servings of Nutrimed Plus provides 81 grams of protein for adults who's Initial Body Weight (IBW) is below 150 lbs, while four servings provides 108 grams of protein for adults who's IBW is below 198 lbs.

Carbohydrate

Low carbohydrate levels in a VLCD promote a shift in one's energy use from carbohydrate to body fat. As body fat is used, the energy by-products of fat metabolism, ketones, rise in the blood. It is theorized that the presence of ketones suppresses appetite and plays a role in nitrogen sparing.

Fat

The dietary fat in VLCD is a source of essential fatty acids. It also helps with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and serves to stimulate gallbladder motility, which may help minimize the risk of gallstone formation.

Vitamins, Minerals and Electrolytes

Three servings of Nutrimed Plus provide 100% of the RDI for vitamins and minerals and adequate, but conservative levels of sodium and potassium to maintain positive balances during the reducing phase.
